The dental team at Volunteers in Medicine Clinic recently visited The Children’s Center as a part of Give Kids A Smile. The initiative, created by the American Dentist Association (ADA), is an opportunity for children ages 3 to 18 who can’t normally afford to see a dentist to receive free dental care.
The VIM Clinic dental team provided free dental screenings to over 5o preschoolers and referred any children with oral health concerns to come and be seen at the VIM Clinic Dental Office.
Miriam Arvelo, Dental Clinic Coordinator, schedules and organizes the many Give Kids A Smile events with the help of volunteers and staff. Miriam said, “We love participating in Give Kids a Smile because it’s another way that VIM Clinic makes sure that no one in the community slips through the gaps.”
Each child not only receives a dental screening and a quick lesson on how to maintain proper oral health, but also gets to take home a goodie bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, an informational VIM Clinic flyer, and a quick dental health flyer.
“Events like this help strengthen the community by starting from the foundation – the kids,” explained Miriam.
With the help of volunteer dentists, dental students, and hygienists, Miriam and the dental team will next visit the Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island on April 6.
